How Long Do THC Seltzers Last? A Guide to Shelf Life, Nano-Emulsion, and Can Storage
One of the nice things about having a favorite beverage is knowing there's one waiting for you when the moment calls for it. Whether that means a cold Bimble after a long day, something to bring to dinner with friends, or a few different flavors in the fridge for the weekend, it's reasonable to wonder just how long THC seltzers actually last in the fridge or pantry.
The good news is that properly packaged THC beverages are designed to maintain their quality over a defined shelf life, so there's no need to treat every can like something you have to drink the moment it arrives.
At Bimble, we put a freshness date on our cans to help you know when the drink is at its best, and while there are a few things worth understanding about cannabinoids, formulation, and storage, taking care of your Bimble is pretty straightforward.
Do THC Seltzers Actually Expire?
Like most packaged beverages, THC seltzers have a shelf life, but that doesn't mean they're particularly delicate products.
A properly formulated, sealed beverage can maintain its flavor, carbonation, and cannabinoid content over an extended period, although exactly how long depends on the ingredients, manufacturing process, packaging, and conditions in which it's stored.
That's why you'll find a date printed on your Bimble can.
That date serves as your reference for when we recommend enjoying the product, based on the quality standards we want every Bimble to meet. It isn't necessarily an indication that the drink undergoes a dramatic change the following morning, but we do of course recommend enjoying your Bimble within its labeled shelf life.
The FDA makes a similar distinction in its guidance on food date labeling, noting that many dates on packaged foods are intended to communicate peak quality rather than a universal point at which a product suddenly becomes unsafe.
For us, that quality is important. We want the Cucumber Melon Lime Bimble you open today to deliver the same delicious, garden-inspired experience as the one you enjoyed the last time around.
What About the THC? Does Nano-Emulsion Help?
This is where the science behind cannabis beverages gets interesting.
THC is naturally oil-soluble, which presents a challenge when you're trying to incorporate a carefully measured dose into a water-based beverage. Without the right formulation, cannabinoids can separate or distribute unevenly, making it more difficult to maintain consistency throughout the drink.
Modern THC beverages often address this through nano-emulsion technology, which disperses cannabinoid-containing oil into extremely small droplets that can remain distributed throughout the liquid.
The technology helps make accurately measured cannabis beverages possible, and a well-designed emulsion can contribute to the product's stability over time.
There's scientific research behind this, too. A published study on THC nano-emulsions demonstrated that a particular formulation maintained its physical stability and cannabinoid potency during the study's testing period, including under several challenging conditions.
Of course, formulation still matters. Nano-emulsion isn't a promise that THC will remain unchanged indefinitely, and cannabinoid stability can vary depending on the finished beverage and how it's stored.
That is why the date on the actual product remains more useful than any broad claim about how long THC drinks last.
How Should You Store THC Seltzers?
Fortunately, keeping your Bimble in good condition doesn't require much effort.
As with many packaged beverages, a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat is a sensible place to keep unopened cans, provided you're following any specific storage instructions on the packaging.
Heat can affect the flavor and stability of beverages over time, so leaving a case in a hot car or somewhere exposed to sustained high temperatures isn't a great idea. Freezing cans is also best avoided, since expanding liquid can damage the package or compromise its seal.
We personally think Bimble is at its best served cold, whether straight from the fridge or poured over ice into your favorite glass.
And because the can is sealed until you're ready to enjoy it, you have the flexibility to keep different flavors and THC levels on hand for different occasions.
What If You Find an Older Can of Bimble?
We actually hear some pretty wonderful stories from longtime Bimble customers about their favorite batches.
Some of our original 1mg Blueberry Lemon Ginger drinkers still talk about older batches, purchased well over a year ago, as though they were particularly memorable vintages of wine. We've even heard them described as the best "vintage" of Bimble we've ever made!
We love that people have developed that kind of relationship with our flavors, particularly because we work so hard to make the drink itself worth enjoying.
That said, Bimble isn't meant to be aged like wine, and a fond memory of an older batch shouldn't be confused with guidance to consume products beyond their labeled date.
If you come across an older can, check the printed date and make sure it has been stored appropriately. If it's past that date, we recommend replacing it rather than taking chances with the flavor or formulation.
Likewise, if a can is bulging, leaking, badly damaged, or the contents have an unusual appearance or smell, don't drink or taste-test it. Dispose of the product and reach out to us if you have concerns about the quality of your Bimble.
We take those concerns seriously, and we'd always rather hear from a customer than have someone drink something they're unsure about.
A Little Bimble for Whatever Comes Next
One of the things we've always loved about offering Bimble in different flavors, THC levels, and package sizes is that it lets people make the experience their own.
Maybe you prefer keeping a few 1mg Cucumber Melon Limes around for lighter evenings, while your partner enjoys a 5mg Blueberry Lemon Ginger. Maybe you already know that 10mg Grapefruit Basil Mint is your favorite, or you like having mixed flavors available when friends come over.
Whatever your preference, the idea is to choose an amount that fits how you actually enjoy Bimble, with enough flexibility to have something delicious available when the occasion comes along.
Be thoughtful about how much you'll reasonably enjoy within the printed freshness dates, and remember that good drinks are often even better when shared responsibly with other adults, wherever permitted by law.
After all, we've always believed that life is better with a Bimble.
And sometimes, even better when there's another one in the fridge for a friend.
